Competitions 2006-2007
 

Tuesday 3rd October the club held its first competition of the season, an ‘open’ competition.

There was a large entry: 16 Slides, 28 prints and 30 Electronic Images.  The competition was judged by Anne Gardiner from Ayr Photographic Society. Anne, a very popular and well qualified judge, gave her comments on all the images and the club was very pleased to hear her suggestions on how to improve their work.

Tuesday 17th October. An ‘Action’ competition was held at the club.

There was an entry of 13 Slides, 22 Prints and 31 Digital Images

The judge for the competition was Eric Scott C.P.A.G.B. from Kilmarnock and also a member of Kilmarnock Camera Club. Very well qualified to judge and his comments, criticisms and witticisms were much appreciated by the club.

Tuesday 31st October - a ‘Portrait’competition.

The judge for this competition was Mr. Philip Toman.  Philip is very well qualified to judge this type of competition as he is a professional photographer, most of his work being portraits, weddings and commercial work around the Ayrshire area and beyond.

There was a large entry of 9 slides, 23 prints and 25 Digital images.

He commented wisely on all the entries and his verdict was as follows.

Tuesday 28th November ‘The Rotary Competition’.

Every Year the Rotary club of Girvan provide a subject and a cup. This year the subject was ‘Boats in Carrick’.

All the entries were shown to the Rotary members and then they voted for the winners.

There was an entry of 13 slides, 22prints and 26 electronic images.

Tuesday 5th December ‘Tell a Story’ Competition

 

Members were asked to tell a story with up to six pictures on one board.

There was a large entry and it was judged by Mr. John McGinnis from Barr.

John is a judge we look forward to as his patter keeps us highly amused all night. His comments can bring a smile to the dourest face.

Tuesday 23rd January - an ‘Open Competition’

Judged by Mr. Ian Davidson AGAGB.  Ian is president of Townend camera club and lives in Irvine.  Ian, a very popular judge with our club, would not tell us how long he has been involved in photography but admitted he has been judging for more than 20 years and is now on the SPF judging list.  This makes him very highly qualified to judge our competitions.  After much commenting and giving of advice, the following was his decision.

Blairquhan Estate is a most beautiful part of the river Girvan valley.

Tuesday 27th February

The club held it’s inter club battle with Stranraer Camera Club.  The judge was Roy Smith from Ayr.  Roy, a member of Ayr Photographic society, gave an interesting, entertaining and critical commentary on all the slides and prints.

10 members from Stranraer were present and a very enjoyable evening was had by all.  10 Slides and 20 prints were submitted from each club

The results were -

 Slides Stranraer 155 points Girvan 158 points.

Prints Stranraer 322 points Girvan 309 points.

The highest marked Slide was ‘G2 steam Up’ (Stranraer) with 20 points.

The highest marked print was ‘Killantringan’ (Stranraer) with 20 points.

This left Stranraer the winners by 10 points

 

Tuesday 6th March

 

A digital audio visual competition for slide shows made up from digital images accompanied with music and sounds and shown from a laptop and digital projector.

 

15 shows were entered.  A panel of judges was made up from club members who were not participating in the competition -

Susan Jones, Jim Cuthbertson and Matt Richmond.

 

Their verdict was as follows:

There was an entry of 8 Slides, 21 prints and 25 Electronic Images.  The entries were judged by Mr Ged Connelly who is a well known natural history photographer and a member of Girvan Camera Club made a grand job of judging the competition. Tuesday 20th March - a club ‘Knockout’ competition for prints

 

Many fine prints were seen and a most enjoyable evening was had by all

 

Prints were displayed in pairs and the members were asked to vote for the better of the two prints.  The winning print then went forward to the next round and the loser was eliminated.

Eventually after much hilarity, comments and enthusiastic waving of hands a final winner was chosen.

 

The winner was ‘Greenan Castle Sunset’ by Susan Jones.

 

Tuesday 27th March - the club held its annual exhibition and prize giving.

 

The evening was very well attended, refreshments were served, all the winning prints were on display and all the winning slides and slideshows were projected.

The championship is awarded to the author gaining the highest points total over all internal competitions.
